One of the most ancient temples in Chennai city is the famous Kapaliswara Temple in Mylapore. The history of the temple goes back to the Puranic Age. Once Parvati was distracted by the beauty of a peacock when Lord Siva was teaching the meaning of Panchakshara Mantra to her. Lord Siva cursed her to be born as a peacock. She repented and when she asked for the relief, Siva told her to take the form of peacock and worship Him. In this way Parvati regained her original form. The place, Mylapore (literally Peacock-puram), where she worshipped thus is named after this incident.
A grand annual celebration being held in the month of Phalguni in commomeration of this. As part of the celebrations, a Rathotsava (car-festival) and 'Arubatthu Movar' (celebrating the 63 shiva saints) are being held. Thousands from various places attend the festival.
'Jiva Seva is Siva Seva — Service to humanity is worship of Shiva' is the motto of the Math. Accordingly, Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai offered buttermilk and lime-juice to the devotees this year also on 15th & 16th March 2022 to 19,300 devotees.
On the night of the festival the Monks and Volunteers of Sri Ramakrishna Math engaged themselves in cleaning the roads, leading to the temple.
சென்னை நகரத்தின் முக்கிய கோயில்களில் பிரசித்திபெற்றது அருள்மிகு கபாலீஸ்வரர் கோயில். இதன் ஸ்தல புராணத்தில் சிவபெருமானும் பார்வதியும் கைலாயத்தில் அமர்ந்து அளவளாவும் போது சிவன் பார்வதிக்கு பஞ்சாட்சர மந்திரத்தை விளக்கிக் கொண்டிருந்த சமயம் பார்வதியின் கவனம் ஒரு மயிலால் ஈர்க்கப்படுகிறது. இதனால் கோபம் அடைந்த சிவன் பார்வதியை மயிலாக கடவது என்று சபிக்கிறார். இந்த சாபத்திலிருந்து விடுதலை பெற சிவபெருமான் அருளிய படி பார்வதி தேவி மயிலாக உருவெடுத்து சிவ பெருமானை பூஜிக்கிறார். எனவே இந்த இடம் மயிலாப்பூர் என அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.
இக் கோவிலில் ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் பங்குனி மாதத்தில் பத்து நாட்கள் உற்சவம் நடைபெறும். இதில் முக்கிய திருவிழாக்கள் திருத்தேர் மற்றும் அறுபத்து மூவர் விழா.
இந்த விழாவைக் காண பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கான மக்கள் கூடுவதுண்டு. அவர்களது தாகம் தீர்க்க மயிலாப்பூர் ஸ்ரீராமகிருஷ்ண மடம் 'ஜீவ சேவையே சிவ சேவை' என ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் நீர்மோர் எலுமிச்சம் பழச்சாறு வழங்குவதுண்டு. இந்த ஆண்டும் மார்ச் 15 மற்றும் 16 ஆம் தேதி அன்று நடந்த விழாவிற்கு வருகை தந்த 19,300 மக்களுக்கு நீர்மோரும் எலுமிச்சம் பழச்சாறும் வழங்கப்பட்டன.
இரவு 10 மணிக்கு மேல் ஸ்ரீராமகிருஷ்ண மடத்தின் துறவிகளும் மற்றும் தன்னார்வதொண்டர்களும் இணைந்து சாலையில் இருந்த குப்பைகளை சுத்தம் செய்து உழவாரப்பணி செய்தனர்.
