National Awareness Convention On Leprosy – Saturday 20th August, 2016
Although leprosy was declared eliminated from our country a decade ago, India shares about
60% of the total global leprosy burden as per World Health Organization (WHO – report 2015).
Effective multi-drug therapy is provided by the Government free of cost, however awareness on
therapeutic and rehabilitative options is very low amongst public.
The Leprosy Afflicted Persons (LAPs) are not only isolated by the society and family but also
tormented by several acts against leprosy enacted during the British rule (1898), and many of
them are discriminatory and require amendments. Several of these acts need to be repealed to
enable LAPs to lead a dignified life as any other citizen.
To mitigate the sufferings of the LAPs, Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai is organising a National
Convention on Leprosy to create awareness among the people.
