Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai, has been implementing Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) for over 36 years. Through these efforts, over 2,000 Leprosy Cured but Deformed Persons (LCDPs) and their families have been successfully rehabilitated, focusing on self-reliance while addressing socioeconomic and physical challenges.
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Special Self-Help Groups (SHGs) for LCDPs, a rehabilitation event was held on 20th Dec 2024 at Chennai Math. Sri R. Siva delivered the welcome address, recalling that these SHGs were initiated by Smt. Supriya Sahu, IAS, Secretary, Department of Health & Family Welfare, Govt of Tamil Nadu to empower LCDPs economically. Dr. S. Sivasubramanian elaborated on the economic empowerment achieved through SHGs, and highlighted the Math’s vital ulcer dressing services, which benefit over 200 LCDPs weekly.
The event was graced by distinguished guests, including Chief Guest Dr. P. Sampath, Additional Director of Public Health & Preventive Medicine, and Special Guests Dr. V. Dharmalingam, Additional Director of Medical Services (Leprosy); Shri Bimalkumar Jain, Padma Shri Awardee & Founder Trustee of Bharat Vikas Viklang Nyas (BVVN), Patna; and Dr. El. Ramanathan, Psychiatrist representing Sewa International, UK. The dignitaries lauded Math's dedicated service in rehabilitating LCDPs across Tamil Nadu.
In recognition of outstanding contributions, the Sister Nivedita Award was conferred upon LCDPs. Additionally, Advocate Shri. Ajit Pandian, volunteer Shri. N. Duraisami, and donor Shri. Komal Ganesan were honoured for their support in strengthening the Math’s LCDP services.
During the event, 27 LCDPs received rehabilitation assistance for various livelihoods as well as to improve their microbusiness activities, including carpentry, tailoring, shoe-making, vegetable and flower vending, tiffin shop setup, and medical aid. This initiative further strengthened their economic independence.
The event also featured a Thiruvilakku Pooja, performed by 75 LCDPs. A highlight of the gathering was the exhibition of products made by LCDPs, including handcrafted toys, fancy items, footwear, carpentry products, and food items, showcasing their entrepreneurial skills.
The program concluded with a Benedictory address by Swami Satyajnananandaji Maharaj, Adhyaksha of Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai. The Math expressed its deep gratitude to Seva International for the financial support in the rehabilitation and empowerment of LCDPs.
