On 3rd February, 2024, Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai, hosted a rehabilitation programme for 80 Leprosy Cured but Deformed Persons (LCDPs). The event began with prayers and a Self-Help Group gathering. Distinguished international scientists such as Prof. Reinhard Fassler Director, Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, Germany, Prof. Michael N Hall, Biozentrum, University of Basel, Switzerland, and Prof. Vivek Malhotra, The Centre for Genomic Regulations, Spain graced the event. Facilitated by Dr. B. Madan of CSIR-CLRI, they engaged with monks, meditated, and visited the Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) camp.
At the camp, LCDPs showcased microbusiness products, impressing the guests with their resilience and entrepreneurial spirit. The scientists explored displays of Math's initiatives, discussed challenges, and praised efforts to empower LCDPs. Volunteers detailed the origins of leprosy services and the transformative impact of CBR. The guests emphasized addressing stigma and accelerating legal reforms for LCDPs.
The scientists shared insights on wound management challenges, including loss of sensation and advanced wound states, urging innovation in this field. Prof. Fassler highlighted the need for inclusive measures to combat misconceptions and empower LCDPs. They lauded the sustainable service model of Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai which promotes dignity and societal integration for LCDPs.
Concluding the event, the scientists distributed rehabilitation materials, expressing admiration for the comprehensive community approach in serving the LCDPs.
