Leprosy Cured but Deformed Persons (LCDPs) have long endured exclusion and rejection from festivals and community celebrations, a grim consequence of prevailing social stigma, which regrettably persists even in today's modern society. More particularly, the abandoned LCDPs who reside at colonies and homes are forced to confront the furious evil inhumanely, a distressing aspect in the life of LCDPs.
On October 28, 2023, Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai along with Udhavum Kaikal, a humanitarian trust located at Purasawalkam, Chennai to commemorate Ananda Deepavali with the marginalized LCDPs at the Government Leprosy Centre, situated near Chengalpattu.
When volunteers from various service organizations arrived at the Government Leprosy Centre (GLC) campus, where LCDPs reside, the residents gathered near an old, worn-out hall, quietly anticipating some support or companionship. The expressions on many faces reflected deep challenges and a longing for connection. The volunteers recognized that while material or financial help is important, it may not fully address the deeper emotional and social needs. Understanding that LCDPs are often left out of community celebrations like Deepavali, the volunteers took the initiative to offer their presence and support, hoping to bring moments of joy and a sense of inclusion.
About 35 LCDPs were given high quality dressing shirts, Dhoti and Sarees and Sweets with a sense that they too should celebrate the Deepawali with festive spirits. The volunteers visited the Uttarapathi Siva Temple located within the premises of the campus where the LCDPs are doing Pooja to the Lord. LCDPs thanked the volunteers wholeheartedly and they expressed happiness for the gesture. Volunteers too felt happiness while being with them and engaged them the day.
