The Kaanum Pongal 2025 celebration, organized by Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai, as part of Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) services for Leprosy Cured but Deformed Persons (LCDPs), took place at SKNS PMC Vivekananda Vidhyalaya Junior College, Perambur, Chennai, on 16th and 17th January 2025. The event, marking the sixth consecutive year at the school, aimed to promote community, strengthen family ties, and celebrate cultural traditions.
Day 1 began with a planning session for LCDP beneficiaries and volunteers, followed by an interactive talk by Sri Balasubramanianji of Nallore Vattam, who emphasized the value of service despite personal challenges. His motivational speech focused on the importance of small acts of service and national progress. The evening included a Yoga and Mindfulness session led by Smt. J. Lavanya, a distinguished Bharatanatyam dancer from Centre for Performing Arts, Kalanubhava, concluding with dinner. Smt. Srinidhi, SAKSHAM Functionary attended the event as a special guest.
Day 2 began early with LCDPs and their families preparing Pongal in traditional clay pots and offering it to the Sun God. A meditation and exercise session followed, led by SAKSHAM state functionary. Breakfast prasadam was served, generously sponsored by Auronodiyam Charitable Trust. Sri V. Radhakrishnan, an LCDP, brought 36 family members, highlighting the critical role of family involvement in LCDP rehabilitation. The day continued with sports events organized by RSS volunteers, with prizes for winners. Their captivating Rangoli performance enhances the festive spirit of the event. In total, the celebration saw the participation of around 60 family members, 7 volunteers, 5 guests, and 40 LCDPs.
The event is the blend of divinity, tradition, and service and concluded with prayers to the “Holy Trio”. Through sports and cultural activities, the celebration strengthened family-social bonds, promoted inclusion, and eliminated discrimination, creating an ecosystem of unity and festive joy for all.
