In Chennai, heard of Vivekananda Navaratri? Here's what it is

CHENNAI: You've heard of Navaratri, the nine-day Hindu festival in celebration of Goddess Durga's victory of good over evil, which usually takes place in the last quarter of every year. But in Chennai, there's a rather unique Navaratri celebration, which has been taking place every February for the last 20 years - the Vivekananda Navaratri.

The festival of thought and culture commemorates the nine days that Swami Vivekananda spent at the Vivekananda Illam in 1897. "This year is extra special because it is also the 125th year of his visit," says S V Srinivasan, a volunteer at the Sri Ramakrishna Math, which oversees the Vivekananda Illam.

"When Swami Vivekananda first came to the city in 1893, it was as a wandering monk. He inspired the youth of Madras and when the opportunity that year to attend the World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago, his followers encouraged him to go," says Swami Dharmishthananda, manager of the Sri Ramakrishna Math in Mylapore.

Part-funded by Bhaskara Sethupathy, the ruler of Ramnad, Swami Vivekananda went to Chicago and spent the next four years in the US. When he returned, he stayed at the Vivekananda Illam (then known as Ice House) for nine days, delivering six lectures in Chennai on subjects ranging from philosophy to the future of India.

"After he left Chennai Ice House passed through several hands until 1997, when it was leased to Sri Ramakrishna Math for 99 years," he says.

"We have converted the house into a museum and art gallery of the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda. We also have a 4D movie on his life."

Vivekananda Navaratri is open to the public and includes lectures as well as traditional music, dance and puppet shows. More than 300 people visit the Illam every day during the festival, says Srinivasan.
