The Raatai Handloom – Traditional Weaving Workshop was held on 11th and 12th October 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the Vivekananda Cultural Centre. A total of 21 participants took part in this immersive two-day learning experience focused on the art of hand weaving.
The sessions were conducted by Ms. Kalai Arasi, who introduced the participants to the rich heritage and techniques of traditional handloom weaving. The workshop commenced with a flower offering and prayer, followed by an introduction to the art form.
Over the two days, participants learned to create plain weave patterns and art-oriented designs using traditional methods. Many of the participants shared that the process of weaving helped them reduce stress, improve focus, and experience the joy of mindful creation.
During the valedictory session, participants shared their heartfelt feedback. Director Maharaj, of Vivekananda Cultural Centre, addressed the gathering and highlighted the value of such traditional arts in fostering concentration, creativity, and inner harmony. Also quoted Swami Vivekananda's views to uplift these cultural arts and entertainment of women empowerment in one of the conversation with Sister Nivedita.
All participants received refreshments, lunch prasad, participation certificates, a laminated photo of Swami Vivekananda, and a book as tokens of appreciation.
The workshop concluded with a sense of fulfillment and inspiration to carry forward the beauty of traditional handloom weaving in daily life.
