133rd Year of Celebration Commemorating Swami Vivekananda’s Historic Address at the Parliament of Religions, Chicago (11th September 1893)

On 11th September 2025, the 133rd anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s landmark speech at the Parliament of Religions, Chicago, was solemnly commemorated with a series of inspiring events that reflected on the enduring relevance of his message of universal brotherhood and harmony.

The celebration commenced with the traditional Flower Offering, followed by the sacred Arati and Lighting of the Lamp, invoking divine blessings for the proceedings. A soul-stirring Group Song was presented by the talented students of M.O.P. College, setting a reverent tone for the occasion.

The gathering was graced by our esteemed Chief Guest, Sri Sunil Paliwal, IAS, Chairperson of Chennai Port Trust, who delivered a compelling address highlighting the timeless wisdom and global significance of Swami Vivekananda’s vision.

The Introductory Address was delivered by Br. Vānīshachaitanya Maharaj, Director of the Vivekananda Cultural Centre, who eloquently articulated the importance of upholding the spiritual and cultural values embodied by Swami Vivekananda.

Swami Dhyanagamyananda ji Maharaj, Secretary of Vivekananda College, Chennai, shared profound reflections on the significance of Universal Brotherhood in contemporary society, emphasizing its essential role in fostering peace and understanding amidst diversity.

In a gracious gesture, Revered Swami Atmaghanananda ji Maharaj, Senior Monk od the Order felicitated the Chief Guest and the distinguished speakers, honoring their contributions to the event and the ideals of Swami Vivekananda.

The spirit of Swami Vivekananda’s teachings resonated powerfully through the heartfelt speeches delivered by students from Queen Mary’s College, MOP Vaishnave College, Bharathi Women’s College, Guru Nanak College, and Lady Willington College. Their reflections illuminated the enduring relevance of the Chicago Address in today’s world, inspiring everyone to embody the values of courage, tolerance, and selfless service.

The celebration was brought to a close with a Benedictory Address by Revered Swami Atmaghanananda ji Maharaj, Senior Monk of the Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai, invoking blessings for peace and spiritual growth.

The Vote of Thanks was offered by Swami Raghunayakananda ji Maharaj, Manager of Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai, expressing gratitude to all participants and organizers for their dedicated efforts in making the event a grand success.

Following the formal program, the attendees, especially the students, were given the opportunity to visit the Vivekanadar illam museum deepening their understanding and appreciation of his legacy and the students spent some time in the meditation room where Swami Vivekananda stayed for nine days from 6th -14th February 1897.

The gathering concluded with the distribution of Prasadam, symbolizing the sharing of spiritual nourishment and goodwill.

This commemorative event not only celebrated the historic moment of Swami Vivekananda’s address but also reaffirmed the enduring call for universal harmony, spiritual awakening, and service to humanity that continues to inspire generations worldwide.

325 students and 8 Faculties from 7 colleges participated in the program, received certificate and gift books.
