National Youth Day Celebration at Vivekanandar Illam Campus on the 12th January – National Youth Day – 153rd Birthday of Swami Vivekananda.
At 7:45 am sharp,in the presence of about 200 youth, Revered Swami Gautamananda ji Maharaj, Adyaksha Sri Ramakrishna Math Mylapore, Chennai, offered solemn Arati to the magnificently garlanded statue of Swami Vivekananda, in the park adjacent to Vivekanandar Illam Campus. Youth from Ramakrishna Mission students Home played a traditional band dressed smartly in crisp uniforms. Students, participants of Spoken Hindi and Learn English courses of the morning batch at Vivekananda Cultural Centre, also joined the friends of Swamiji(devotees) by offering pushpanjali-flower offering- to Swamiji’s statue. Swami Gautamananda ji Maharaj, in his solemn yet motivating talk, exhorted the youth present to follow the life and teachings of Swamiji and make their lives blessed. Prasad was distributed to all those present.
The evening function started with a theme very close to the heart of Swamiji that is Strength, Courage and Self-Reliance.
An excellent performance of ‘Kalarippayattu’-Traditional Self-defense Martial art by Giridharan’s Kalariyil Kshathriyas Team- which also included a women participant- kept the audience riveted to their seats by their breathtaking performance !
This was followed by cultural program by tiny tots from G.K. Shetty Vivekananda Vidyalaya, Ambattur, who charmed the audience with their innocent rendering of lofty teachings of Swami Vivekananda in the appealing form of drama.
Afterwards a new 3D short movie for the youth was released by Dr C. Sylendra Babu , I.P.S., ADGP, Coastal Security Group, Tamilnadu. In the Special Talk which followed, he touched the hearts of the assembled youthful crowd of students and friends of Swamiji in his characteristic style of humour combined with lively anecdotes from the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda. While concluding he gave a task to the youth to not only buy the books of Swamiji, but assimilate the teachings by making a thorough study and put them into practice in their lives, thereby becoming better human beings.
In the end Revered Swami Gautamanandaji Maharaj, in his inimitable and humorous style, regaled the assembled friends of Swamiji with deep insights into his life and teachings.
Lastly a video presentation, highlighted the yeoman role played by Ramakrishna Mission in various flood affected areas during the recent devastating rains in Chennai.
The audience left with a lasting feeling of the benign presence of Swami Vivekananda still shaping the destiny of this ancient land of ours even after 153 years of his birth.
